2/6/2020 - 16/6/2020 / Week 8 - Week 10 Lim He Yu (0340423) Bachelor of Mass Communication (Advertising) / Design Principles Project 2: Sense of Place Any medium Task In this project, we were instructed to create an artwork that expresses how we see the things/places around us. Like project 1, we're required to apply the design principles we have learned throughout the semester. Idea Exploration For the initial ideas, I was inspired by the Bauhaus movement, and I wanted to incorporate historical buildings from my hometown, which is Penang, into the artwork. The rationale for this was to bring something old to "life", by combining the old buildings and modern design elements to create something new. You can take a look at the reference I found below. Figure 1.0: Paul Smith Design (source) Apart from that, I really liked the idea of mixed media artwork, as in putting illustrations in images. From the inspo I've found on Pinter...
19/5/2020 - 2/6/2020 / Week 6 - Week 8 Lim He Yu (0340423) Bachelor of Mass Communication (Advertising) / Design Principles Project 1: Self-Portrait Any medium Task In this project, we were instructed to create a self portrait in any medium. The self-portrait has to reflect our life experiences, culture and so on, basically the things that define us. Apart from that, we have to apply the design principles we have learnt throughout the first five weeks of the semester. Idea Exploration The first idea was to illustrate myself in Illustrator, using dry brushes. This idea didn't have much depth to it, it's just something that I've always wanted to do. So, I thought now is a good time to put my words into action. Take a look at the references below. Figure 1.0: First Idea References The second idea I had in mind was to incorporate what I've learnt in Digital Photography and Imaging, which is photo manipulation. I find it to be ver...
17/6/2020 - 17/7/2020 / Week 10 - Week 14 Lim He Yu (0340423) Bachelor of Mass Communication (Advertising) / Typography Project 2B: Typography- Expression, Hierarchy and Composition Lectures Week 10 (Introduction and Briefing) This week we were briefed on the second part of project 2, which was to design an A3 poster with the tagline of our liking. After that, we were instructed to express the tagline through type expression. Finally, we had to animate the overall design. Before jumping into the process of designing, we had to come up with three taglines to be used in our design. Mr. Vinod and Mr. Shamsul gave us advice and feedback for our progress of our blogs as well. Week 11 (Feedback and Consultation) With our taglines decided, we were now required to sketch out our ideas for the poster design. With the sketch done, we were then given feedback to progress with our work. Week 12 (Feedback and Consultation) This week we've started d...
2/9/2020 - 16/9/2020 / Week 1 - Week 3 Lim He Yu (0340423) Bachelor of Mass Communication (Advertising) / Illustration & Visual Narratives Exercise 1/ Vormator Challenge Lectures Week 1 Principles of character design: Triple emphasis on shapes Colour Emphasis and contrast Harmony (shapes, lines, colours, patterns) Expressions and poses Week 2 Chiaroscuro refers to the use of light and dark to create the illusion of three-dimensional volume on a flat surface. The term translates to "light-dark"; chiaro meaning bright or clear and scuro meaning dark or obscure. Week 3 No class. Instructions We were given a set of 8 vormator shapes to create a character to be put on a trading card design. The 8 eight vormator shapes are shown below. With the limited freedom to draw the shapes we want, I am grateful that we get to merge or subtract the shapes. Idea Exploration Drafts Coming up with a character using those eight shapes wa...
26/6/2020 - 17/7/2020 / Week 11 - Week 14 Lim He Yu (0340423) Bachelor of Mass Communication (Advertising) / Design Principles Final Project: Visual Analysis Any medium Task In this final project, we're required to choose an artwork to understand and analyze the design principles in the artwork. After that, using the information from the analysis, we're required to design something new inspired by the chosen artwork. Before designing the artwork, we first have to complete the analysis part of the project is carried out in 3 phases (Observation, Analysis, Interpretation). Part 1: Visual Analysis Figure 1.0: Chosen Artwork (https://go.distance.ncsu.edu/) PHASE 1: OBSERVATION At first glance, the artwork layout is in portrait format and the overall colours used are red, yellow, blue, pink and green. From the bottom up, there are large and miniscule illustrations drawn with organic lines, accompanied by really small Japanese text. After that...
