 Lectures

Week 9
This week was the last class where we were brief on this final project and we were taught about how to come up with stories using the three-act structure. We were also told about the main theme for our comics, which is Isekai.

Week 10 - 15
These weeks we were given consultations and we were free to work on our final project.

 Instructions

The gist of what we were required to do was to draw a 10-page comic max. and a motion comic based on the 10 pages. The theme we were given was Isekai, which means "Accidental Adventure". Mainly, it focuses to travelling to another realm, time, or fantasy world.

 Idea Exploration

The Big Idea
This story is based on how I am when I procrastinate, I've always loved the idea of having infinite free time, because it has been awhile since I had free time. So, this story tells a girl who loves procrastinating and avoiding her responsibilities, then accidentally crosses over to an alternate universe where time stops, where the only things you love most exist.

Shown below is my graphic novel proposal, the contents show the three-act structure of my story, the moodboard and the character sketches and description.

 Execution

Graphic Novel
My process of making the comic was not easy as I wasn't very good at drawing on paper, I tried to, but it came out very unappealing, so I would rather stick with what I know, which is to draw it digitally in illustrator. I also came up with a flow of the content in the panels, but it has exceeded the maximum amount so I cut down a lot. Shown below are the trial and errors I have made.

During the process, I've tried to incorporate one-point perspective to the panels in hopes to better the composition.

After weeks of drawing and colouring, I finally finished the comic. At the end of it all, I added a grainy texture to the comics to better its aesthetic appeal. I also made some changes to the details of the story and made a slight change to the ending to give the story a deeper meaning.

For the ending, originally Girl was meant to run towards the first panel, but I thought, "What if Girl didn't want to run back to her responsibilities? What if she just wanted to fade away?". With those questions, I decided to end the story with a cliff hanger whereby Girl sees her of room, but does not show any kind of excitement.

For me, the moral of the story was to know when to get out of your "Comfort Zone" before it's too late. As a university student, I firmly believe that I should put myself out there to never miss an opportunity, albeit the go-getter attitude, I sometimes do feel like enclosing myself in my comfort zone. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who feels this way, especially with the stress of uni and all, thus this comic was a tribute to those who are striving to be better.

The final comic can be found in the "Final Outcome" section, along with the motion comic.

Motion Comic
After drawing the comic, it was time to make it come alive. The software I used was Premier Pro, and occasionally Adobe Animate. Please excuse the weird hand movements as I had no idea how to make it look nice. To incorporate the grainy textures that was put in the illustrated comics, I added in a grain, dust and scratches as an overlay to make sure both outcomes were cohesive.

 Final Outcome

Shown below are the outcomes of this project, an graphic novel and a motion comic.

 Feedback

 Reflection

Experience:
It was a painstakingly long process. However, I'm really glad I finished it, and I'm looking forward to illustrating new work in the future.

Observation:
The process of planning and visualizing was very difficult, thus there were a lot of trial and error. Not to mention, doing limited animations wasn't as easy as I thought.

Findings:
I have realised that comics need a lot of attention to detail, not only that, it was quite a challenge for me to draw according to the narrative I've come up with, thus slight tweaking was needed.
