Exercise 2/ Vector Landscape Illustration

 Lectures

Week 4
A good composition is one where the artist controls the movement of the viewer's eye to a beneficial result. We can do this by a number of means, such as reinforcing the focal point with the Rule of Thirds, implied lines, contrast of value and selective colour saturation.

Week 5
.Understanding perspectives will make artworks look real and in proportion. Learning how to use perspective to add distance will give depth to your artwork and make it so much more interesting.

 Instructions

The gist of what we were required to do is a vector illustration landscape with a narrative.

 Idea Exploration

Drafts
I was inspired by the song I've been listening to on loop for the past several weeks, 'Over the Moon' by The Marias. So, I decided to make a space landscape illustration. I've included the references below.

Figure 1.1: Reference #2

Figure 1.2: Reference #3

Figure 1.3: Reference #4

After doing a bit of research I came up with a few sketches for the landscape. In the end, I chose the first sketch because it incorporates the rule of thirds more evidently.

Narrative and Final Artwork
As I've mentioned above, the artwork is inspired by the song 'Over the Moon' by the Marias. It is a sad love song that tells a story of being lost without a lover. Despite the actual meaning of the phrase "over the moon", the artist redefined the phrase as to being lost, instead of being happy. Thus, the artwork features a girl over at moon, looking at Earth, and to tell that she "might as well be over the moon". Below are the lyrics that I've chosen to portray in the illustration.

I'll be your baby
There's nothing better I'd rather do
I'm lost completely
I might as well be over the moon

For the final artwork, I wanted to represent the song with my interpretation of their music video. The video has very vintage vibes, and I wanted to incorporate that vibe, so I adjusted the artwork to have darker tones and a grainy texture.

 Reflection

Experience:
I think this exercise has been fun when it comes to brainstorming ideas.

Observation:
I had some trouble finding a narrative that I really loved, in the end I chose something that's familiar and very sad-core.

Findings:
I realized portraying a narrative in an artwork is not as easy as I thought, so I hope I manage to meet the requirements.
