After that, using the information from the analysis, we're required to design something new inspired by the chosen artwork. Before designing the artwork, we first have to complete the analysis part of the project is carried out in 3 phases (Observation, Analysis, Interpretation).  Part 1: Visual Analysis  Figure 1.0: Chosen Artwork (https://go.distance.ncsu.edu/) PHASE 1: OBSERVATION At first glance, the artwork layout is in portrait format and the overall colours used are red, yellow, blue, pink and green. From the bottom up, there are large and miniscule illustrations drawn with organic lines, accompanied by really small Japanese text. After that...

2/6/2020 - 16/6/2020 / Week 8 - Week 10 Lim He Yu (0340423) Bachelor of Mass Communication (Advertising) / Design Principles Project 2: Sense of Place Any medium  Task  In this project, we were instructed to create an artwork that expresses how we see the things/places around us. Like project 1, we're required to apply the design principles we have learned throughout the semester.   Idea Exploration  For the initial ideas, I was inspired by the Bauhaus movement, and I wanted to incorporate historical buildings from my hometown, which is Penang, into the artwork. The rationale for this was to bring something old to "life", by combining the old buildings and modern design elements to create something new. You can take a look at the reference I found below. Figure 1.0: Paul Smith Design (source) Apart from that, I really liked the idea of mixed media artwork, as in putting illustrations in images. From the inspo I've found on Pinter...

Project 1: Self Portrait

The self-portrait has to reflect our life experiences, culture and so on, basically the things that define us. Apart from that, we have to apply the design principles we have learnt throughout the first five weeks of the semester.   Idea Exploration  The first idea was to illustrate myself in Illustrator, using dry brushes. This idea didn't have much depth to it, it's just something that I've always wanted to do. So, I thought now is a good time to put my words into action. Take a look at the references below. Figure 1.0: First Idea References The second idea I had in mind was to incorporate what I've learnt in Digital Photography and Imaging, which is photo manipulation. I find it to be ver...

Design Principles: Weekly Exercises

14/4/2020 - 12/5/2020 / Week 1 - Week 5 Lim He Yu (0340423) Bachelor of Mass Communication (Advertising) / Design Principles Symbol, Image and Words Photography, Photoshop, other relevant design software Idea Exploration:  This week we were tasked to create an arbitrary symbol and an artwork with imagery and typography. What's an "Arbitrary Symbol"? An arbitrary symbol is a sign that has no obvious resemblance to the object or concept signified, compared to iconic symbols. In other words, the meaning of an arbitrary symbol has to be learned, there is no causal link to the signifier and signified. What's "Imagery and Typography"? Imagery is the visual language used to help audiences/viewers relate to a piece of artwork in the form of an image. Typography is the art of arranging letters and text in a way that makes an artwork legible, clear and visually appealing, which involves visual hierarchy too.  Research & References:  F...
